VACANCY - SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

The School Committee of Lynn, Massachusetts, is searching for an educational leader, who will guide the school system through a period of planned change and school improvement.

THE CITY AND ITS SCHOOLS

Lynn , Massachusetts , is a greater Boston community located on the North Shore .  Its population is 90,000 with a school enrollment of 13,500 pupils in grades PreK-12.  Its twenty-six schools include sixteen elementary schools, three middle schools and three high schools, including one vocational school, and two alternative schools.

The seven-member school committee is chaired by the Mayor.  The Lynn School Department is moving into a period of development that will influence its effectiveness for many years.  The climate within the community fosters the selection of an educational leader who will strengthen the Lynn superintendency and who will guide the system through a planned movement toward excellence.

A CHALLENGE QUITE DIFFERENT FROM THE REST

The Lynn superintendency presents a unique challenge.  The incoming superintendent, in collaboration with the School Committee and staff, will lead the system through a developmental period resulting in significant improvement.  The city seeks a school system which will deepen community pride, one which will better prepare its young people for further education, meaningful employment, productive citizenship and personal growth.

The incoming superintendent will become the school system’s chief executive officer responsible for overall planning, operation and performance of the school system.  He/She will provide staff support for the School Committee and will head the system’s senior management team.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

1.     Doctorate preferred

2.     Ten years experience in education administration

3.     Massachusetts Superintendent Certification

4.     Reside in the City of Lynn within six months

 MAJOR DUTIES

As chief executive officer of the Lynn Public Schools , the superintendent will be responsible for:

  • Budget
  • Educational planning and implementation
  • Organization development and business management
  • Development of management teaming, leadership and supervision functions
  • Staff selection, training, supervision and compensation
  • Monitoring and measurement of school effectiveness
  • School system operations within the legal parameters
  • Contract administration

The superintendent will perform these duties through effective organization development, leadership and delegation, working closely with the School Committee and through his/her staff.

Under no circumstances is it appropriate for a candidate to communicate in any form with a member of the School Committee concerning his/her candidacy at any time before final action is taken by the Committee relative to the vacancy to be filled.

BASE SALARY:     $130,000 - $150,000
